New – The Story of a Novice Itinerant Buddhist Priest
What Happens When a Newspaper Reporter
Beccomes a Novice Itinerant Buddhist Priest
Ken Sato
Traveling Alone
The Weight of a 100 Yen Offering
The first time I was allowed to travel alone
I boarded a train from Kyoto to Osaka
The train was almost empty
But sitting right in front of me
Was an older man who looked to be about 50 years old
He sat with his legs spread out wide
And the zipper of his pants was undone
One definitely would not say
That his appearance was elegant
I didn’t know what he was thinking
But suddenly that older man stood up
And walked over and stood right in front of me
Stuck out his hand, and said, “Here!”
For a second, I didn’t know what was happening
I looked, and saw that the man was holding a 100 yen coin
It took me another few seconds to realize that this money
Was an offering to me, because I was dressed
As an itinerant Buddhist priest
When I realized what was happening
Blood rushed up to my face
And I didn’t know what to do
Someone I had never seen before
Someone I didn’t know
Had just suddenly given me some money
I had never had such and experience before
I was so flustered that I even forgot to thank him
Receiving a 100 yen offering is a heavy weight,
And at that moment, for the first time
I had the feeling that I understood the purpose
Of the Zen training I went through
The training, as well as being intended
To help me become a complete human being,
Was also intended to help me prove worthy
Of people’s (all human being’s) trust and faith
In Buddhist priests
